Helicopter Aircrew Officer
Winch Operator / Rescue Officer

This course is the qualifying course in non-pilot helicopter aircrew operations, providing technical training for aircrew in respect to all operational missions in the Search & Rescue (SAR) and Aerial
Work environments.

On successful completion of this course, students are awarded a Certificate and industry standard CASA (Civil Aviation Safety Authority) C.A.O. 29.11 Winching Approval.

Course Information:

The Helicopter Aircrew Officer Course is made up of four (4) stages, two (2) compulsory (Stages 1 & 2) and two (2) optional stages...

Stage 1 - Correspondence based theory including Study Manual / Guide, DVD presentations, research, scenario's.
Stage 2 - Practical Week (Duration - 7 to 10 Days depending on course size)
Stage 3 - Work Experience. Graduates of Stage 2 are rostered at their request for work tasks with our experienced crews. During this stage of training they work with an experienced aircrew instructor to gain further skills and industry knowledge.
Stage 4 - Limited supervision work experience. When graduates get to this level, they hold the positions deemed appropriate to their skills and knowledge levels. They work as Rescue Swimmers and Aircrew on selected company missions gaining valuable flying hours and experience.

Pre-requisites:
Good fitness, strong swimmer. It is not a pre-requisite, but prospective students (if in doubt) can undertake a Class 2 aviation medical.

Additional Information:
Students undertaking the Winch Operator specialty are also included
on the External Rescue Specialist sessions as part of their dual
course qualification. Both courses cover the following...

- Over Land Winching (open area & confined)
- Over Water Winching (open ocean)
- High Line Transfer Technique (boat to helicopter)
- Sling Load Operations (Bambi Bucket Ops & Long Line)
- Emplaning & Deplaning (over land & water)
- Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HUET)
- All aspects of crew duties, including navigation, SAR Observer,
radio operations, and Normal & Emergency Operating procedures,
to name a few.
